The Mendelssohn Chorale, under the direction of Martha Bein, will perform Joseph Haydn’s Mass in Time of War with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra for the RSO’s concert “Classics 2: Old War Poems.”
Composed in 1796, the Mass comes from the period of Haydn’s later works such as The Creation and more expansive symphonies and is similar in form and scale. At the time the work was composed, Austria was rallying troops once again following an unsuccessful peace accord. Also called Paukenmesse or Kettledrum Mass, the insistent use of timpani reminds some people of distant cannons in time of war. Tickets available through RSO.
