Opera Prelude: Eugene Onegin
Join seasoned and new opera fans alike for a free lecture in MPAC’s “Opera Prelude” series! Guest speaker Dennis Ryan will discuss Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.
Tchaikovsky’s many moods—tender, grand, melancholy—are all given free rein in Eugene Onegin. The opera is based on Pushkin’s iconic verse novel, which re-imagines the Byronic romantic anti-hero as the definitive bored Russian aristocrat caught between convention and ennui; Tchaikovsky, similarly, took Western European operatic forms and transformed them into an authentic and undeniably Russian work.
MPAC’s “Opera Prelude” program corresponds with the Met Opera Live in HD series that screens at Showplace 16 Theatre in Rockford. Join us for discussion on an upcoming performance led by a local opera expert. Even if you are unable to attend the live screening of the Metropolitan Opera performance, this is a great way to learn more about opera!
**Please note: this lecture takes place offsite, at Wesley Willows in Rockford. Please check in at the front desk at 4141 N Rockton Ave 61103, and the Guest Services Associate will direct you to the Van Sickle Room room, where the lecture will be held.
