Special Jazz Event: Duke/Stallmann Duo
Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center presents a special Jazz at Starr Center event! The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door.
Come join us for an evening of intuitive, improvisational music by saxophonist Steve Duke and pianist Kurt Stallmann.
Rooted in jazz and classical traditions, Steve Duke has established himself as a leading artist in contemporary music and multi-genre performance. He is the only American to have commissioned and premiered two works that received awards at the prestigious Institut international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges. Steve’s solo recordings can be heard on Sony/Columbia, Centaur, Capstone, SEAMUS, Equilibrium, GMEB/UNESCO/CIME and EMF.
Rockford native Kurt Stallmann is a composer and pianist whose approach to sound is inclusive and integrative. His compositions include works for acoustic instruments, electroacoustic combinations, environmental sounds, and synthetic sounds. He also frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines. Kurt’s work focuses on breaking boundaries between environmental sound and music, integrating personal life experiences into his compositions, and connecting the divide between improvisation and composition.
The Duke Stallmann Duo was formed in 2016 and is dedicated to the spirit of spontaneous improvisation, music that is invented intuitively through the acts of listening, responding, and reacting.
