Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is proud to be home to the award-winning Mendelssohn Chorale. Founded in 1975, the Mendelssohn Chorale is one of northern Illinois’ premier vocal ensembles. The Chorale is composed of skilled choral musicians from the greater Rockford area. Under Marti Bein’s direction, the 110-voice choir has grown into a three-tiered ensemble consisting of the large choir, a select chamber choir and Il coro piccolo, an ensemble of twelve. Besides performing in Mendelssohn PAC’s concert series, the Chorale has been the official chorus of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) since 1999.
Martha Bein, conductor the Mendelssohn Chorale since 1994, is a multi-faceted musician with extensive experience in conducting, vocal performance, musical theater, education, and church music. She provides a rewarding experience for Chorale members who improve and excel under her direction.
MENDELSSOHN CHORALE 2018-2019 SEASON
Mass in Time of War, Joseph Haydn ── with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night, November 10 at 7:30.
Composed in 1796, the Mass comes from the period of Haydn’s later works such as The Creation and more expansive symphonies and is similar in form and scale. At the time the work was composed Austria was rallying troops once again following an unsuccessful peace accord. Also called, Paukenmesse or Kettledrum Mass, the insistent use of timpani reminds some people of distant cannons in time of war. Missa in tempore belli will be performed by a select ensemble. The work will be sung in Latin. Monday night rehearsals begin September 24, 2017, at 7:00 pm.
Holiday Pops ── with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night, December 15 at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon, December 16 at 3:00.
The Mendelssohn Chorale returns to the stage of the Coronado to join in singing Holiday favorites with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. The Rockford Symphony’s Holiday Pops is a season highlight for the audience and performers alike. Holiday Pops will be sung by full chorale. Monday night rehearsals begin November 19, 2018, at 7:00 pm.
Mendelssohn Chorale Section Leaders ── twelve singers, three to a part, serve as section leaders for each concert. The section leaders are selected by audition and paid a stipend. The selection process for Mendelssohn Chorale section leaders will begin in May and for the ensemble singing Missa in tempore belli in June.
Mendelssohn Chorale members come to the ensemble with past choral experience, a desire to work on repertoire outside rehearsal, and a passion for singing in a choir.
Registration information will be available soon.
