Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is proud to be home to the award winning Mendelssohn Chorale. Founded in 1975, the Mendelssohn Chorale is one of northern Illinois’ premier vocal ensembles. The Chorale is composed of skilled choral musicians from the greater Rockford area. Under Marti Bein’s direction, the 110-voice choir has grown into a three-tiered ensemble consisting of the large choir, a select chamber choir and Il coro piccolo, an ensemble of twelve. Besides performing in Mendelssohn PAC’s concert series, the Chorale has been the official chorus of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) since 1999.
Martha Bein, conductor the Mendelssohn Chorale since 1994, is a multi-faceted musician with extensive experience in conducting, vocal performance, musical theater, education, and church music. She provides a rewarding experience for Chorale members who improve and excel under her direction.
MENDELSSOHN CHORALE 2017-18 SEASON
Ein deutsches Requiem, Johannes Brahms ── with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night, November 11.
One of the most beautiful choral works ever written. Movements include Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen, Herr Zebaoth,(How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place, O Lord of Hosts!) the central movement that holds a place of high respect in the choral canon. The fifth movement, Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit (You now are sorrowful) sung by a soprano soloist and Ich will euch trösten (Yea, I will comfort you) sung by the chorus was written in memory of Brahms’ mother.
Monday night rehearsals begin September 11, 2017, at 7 pm. The works will be performed by full chorale and in German. There will be ample coaching on the German.
Chichester Psalms, Leonard Bernstein ── with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night, April 28, as part of an all Bernstein concert. Certainly Bernstein’s greatest choral work, this three movement work contains all the energy and passion one would find in any of his musicals (West Side Story, On the Town, Wonderful Town, Trouble in Tahiti and more).
Monday night rehearsals begin March 12, 2018, at 7 pm. The works will be performed by full chorale and in Hebrew. There will be ample coaching on the Hebrew.
YouTube videos are available for listening and viewing both works.
REGISTRATION AND MPAC CHORALE SECTION LEADERS
12 section leaders (3 on a part) will be selected for each of the RSO concerts.
