The Board of Directors is initiating a campaign to make critical capital improvements to our campus. Our HVAC system is in desperate need of an upgrade in order to make Mendelssohn Hall more comfortable. The new system will also increase our energy efficiency and significantly lower our monthly expenses. Other major improvements include repainting the concert hall and replacing the seat cushions. Our goal for this campaign is to raise $350,000 to make the needed improvements. We need your help to secure the future of this valuable arts organization celebrating 135 years in our community.
On October 4, 1884, the new Mendelssohn Club convened for the first time in the home of Mrs. Blanche Ellis Starr to perform music for each other. Throughout our history generous donors have ensured that Mendelssohn has had a place to call home. In 1899, George Briggs built Mendelssohn Hall at 513 West State Street in honor of his late wife, a former Mendelssohn Club President. The club house at 415 North Church Street (now called Starr Center) was built in 1952, thanks to a generous donation from the Emerson family.
In 2012, MPAC received a generous gift from Dr. Bill and Leah Baskin to purchase the First Presbyterian Church building at 406 North Main Street. Our expanded campus has allowed us to offer more music and educational experiences and to define MPAC as an anchor point on Rockford’s developing Cultural Corridor, truly “a place and a space for the arts.”
Because of our dedicated staff and MANY volunteers, Mendelssohn continues to make an iMPACt in our community. We offer so much to the Rockford Community and the Northern Illinois region through our concert presentations, educational outreaches, and through the encouragement and performance opportunities offered to local musicians. We are at a point in time where the need for funds is crucial to maintain and improve our facilities to meet the expanding community needs.
